EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
