Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Discussions Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
