The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This
Each time a major prize-giving event draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to recognize unsung work and fill the passions of followers who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
- Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
- Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often small games, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games in the world and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
